Overview: Frozen Shoulder

Pain Institute Home

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint that gradually worsens, limiting its range of motion. This condition occurs when the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes inflamed and thickened, leading to restricted movement. It often develops slowly and can be triggered by injury, surgery, or prolonged immobility, but sometimes the exact cause is unknown. Symptoms typically progress through three stages: freezing (pain and reduced movement), frozen (stiffness with less pain), and thawing (gradual improvement in mobility). Treatment focuses on relieving pain and restoring movement through physical therapy, medications, and sometimes corticosteroid injections. In persistent cases, surgical options may be considered to release the tightened capsule. Early intervention can help manage symptoms and improve outcomes.
