Dr. Kofinas studied medicine in Athens at the National Kapodistrian University’s School of Medicine. Then came to the U.S. as a research fellow at the University of California, San Francisco, to study Embryology. After completing his medical degree, he immigrated to the U.S. for his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, after which he rounded up his expertise in maternal-fetal medicine at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University.
He spent five years teaching students and doctors-in-training at Wake Forest University and extensively researching the physiology of human labor and fetal and placental circulations. He experimented with Doppler ultrasound and presented groundbreaking findings at scientific fora in the U.S. and Europe. Dr. Kofinas has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and Weil Cornell Medical College. At the same time, he continued to perform advanced clinical research on premature labor, fetal cardiovascular physiology, and fetal therapy, including intrauterine fetal blood transfusion and other fetal procedures.
In 2000, he opened his practice, Kofinas Perinatal, and is a leading physician selected eight times by New York Magazine as one of the “Best Doctors” in New York. He has also been selected as the most compassionate and the “Patient’s Choice” for many consecutive years.
